Slow Cooker Onion Chicken

Slow Cooker Onion Chicken… My mother-in-law cooks this super simple 3-ingredient dish for Sunday supper. The yummy, tasty sauce is the best on rice or mashed potatoes!

This is a no-work dinner my mother-in-law makes all the time. Soft chicken cooks slow in a thick, onion-y cream sauce that looks like gravy with tiny onion bits. Just 3 things make a big warm meal everyone loves on busy days. Scoop it over rice or potatoes for cozy family time.

What You Need

  • 2 to 2½ pounds chicken breasts with no bones or skin (4 to 6 pieces)

  • 1 small packet (1.5 ounces) onion soup mix (dry)

  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of chicken soup (or mushroom soup)

How to Make Slow Cooker Onion Chicken

  1. Spray your slow cooker inside with no-stick spray. This makes cleaning easy.

  2. Put chicken breasts flat on the bottom. They can touch a bit, but keep them even so they cook nice and soft.

  3. In a bowl, mix the onion soup packet and cream soup well. It gets thick with onion specks.

  4. Spread the mix all over the chicken. Cover every bit. Don’t add water—the chicken makes its own juicy sauce.

  5. Put the lid on. Cook on LOW 4 to 6 hours, or HIGH 2½ to 3½ hours. Chicken is done when soft and 165°F inside.

  6. Use two forks to pull chicken into big chunks in the pot, or leave whole. Stir to coat in sauce.

  7. Taste sauce. You can put a little salt or pepper on it if you like. The mix is salty already.

  8. Serve hot chicken and lots of sauce on mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles. Keep cooker on WARM for more helpings.

Fun Ways to Serve
Spoon over soft potatoes, rice, or noodles. Add green beans, broccoli, or salad on the side. Warm bread is great to dip in the gravy!
