What You Need

  • 3 to 3½ pounds chicken legs (10-12 pieces), with skin or without

  • 1½ cups apple butter from a jar

  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar

  • 2 spoons soy sauce (normal or light salt kind)

  • 2 spoons brown sugar, pressed down

  • ½ teaspoon salt, or a bit more if you want

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • Extra: Chopped green parsley to sprinkle on top

How to Make Apple Butter Chicken

  1. Put chicken legs flat in a big slow cooker (5-6 quarts). They can touch a little, but keep them even for good cooking.
  2. Mix apple butter, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Stir until smooth and thick like syrup.
  3. Spoon the mix over chicken like icing a cake. Spread it with the spoon back to cover tops and sides. Pour any left over.
  4. Put the lid on. Cook on low 5-6 hours or high 2½-3 hours. Chicken is ready when soft and meat slides off bone easy. Don’t peek!
  5. Taste sauce. Add salt or vinegar if you want more zing.
  6. For thicker sauce, scoop some into a pot. Boil on stove 5-10 minutes till it gets sticky. Pour back on chicken. (You can skip this.)
  7. Put chicken on a plate. Spoon lots of sauce over. Add parsley. Eat warm with potatoes, noodles, beans, or bread.
