Ingredients
-
1 pound ground beef, browned and emptied
-
1 (24-ounce) jar marinara or pasta sauce
-
3 cups beef broth (or water)
-
2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni (approximately 8 ounces)
-
1 medium onion, cut in bits (or 1 cup of frozen cut onions)
American Chop Suey: Instructions
-
Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat and divide into pieces using a spoon. Drain excess fat.
-
Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook 3–4 minutes until tender (skip this step if using frozen onions).
-
Lightly spray a slow cooker with cooking spray. Put the onions and browned beef into the slow cooker.
-
Pour in the beef broth and the marinara or pasta sauce.
-
Cover and cook on LOW 4–5 hours or HIGH 2–3 hours until flavors blend.
-
About 30–40 minutes before serving, stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni, ensuring it is mostly submerged. Add ½ cup water or broth if needed.
-
Cook on high flame 25 to 35 minutes, stirring halfway, until macaroni is tender but not mushy.
-
Stir everything again, add some salt and pepper, and serve it hot right from the slow cooker.
