Slow Cooker Pork Roast with Sauerkraut is the comfort meal of all comfort meals that fill the house with the inviting aroma of warmth and bring everyone to the table. It takes only four basic ingredients in the slow cooker with jarred sauerkraut and a pork roast to come out with a tender, flavorful cooked meal which the family and the guests will be requesting over and over again. It is simple, filling and ideal when you are in a hurry but wish that you were able to eat a home-cooked meal that is so special.
Ingredients
- Boneless pork shoulder or pork butt roast.
- 3-4 lb.
- Sauerkraut
- 1 (24-32 ounce) container
- including juice.
- Medium onion
- 1
- thinly sliced
- Unsweetened applesauce
- 1 cup
- Caraway seeds
- 1 tablespoon
- (or 2 teaspoons in case you need the taste to be less intense)
Directions
Step 1
Put the pork roast in the bottom of a large slow cooker but the fatty side up in case it has a fat cap. This allows the meat to be baste as it cooks by the fat.
Step 2
Trickle the cut onion across, and about the roast in the slow cooker.
Step 3
Combine the jarred sauerkraut (with all the juice otherwise) in a medium sized bowl or measuring pitcher with the applesauce and the caraway seeds then mix everything loosely.
Step 4
Add the mixture of the sauerkraut, and evenly pour it over the pork roast in the slow cooker, taking care to cover the pork, as far as possible, with the sauerkraut and liquid. It is all alright that part of the roast comes through.
Step 5
Cook the pork in the slow cooker with a lid turned to LOW and time of 8 to 10 hours or turned to HIGH and time to 4 to 5 hours until pork is very tender and can be pulled into several pieces with a fork.
Step 6
When the pork is cooked, take two forks and very carefully remove the pork into big pieces or shreds in the very slow cooker with the sauerkraut and the onions. adding a bit of salt and black pepper, when necessary.
Step 7
Pour the pork and the sauerkraut into shallow dishes or on plates, being careful to leave each person with some of the juicy juices. Hot Serve with your favorite hearty dishes.
